VTXFLOW manufactures globe valves in ASTM A105 — a dense forged carbon steel with no casting porosity risk, rated Class 800–2500. With a working range of -29°C to +425°C, A105 bodies suit small-bore high-pressure lines and hydrogen & refinery units across Class 150 to 2500 service.

Forging gives A105 a uniform, porosity-free grain structure that castings cannot match — which is why API 602 small-bore valves at Class 800 and above are forged, not cast. For sizes up to about 4 inches at high pressure, A105 delivers cast-WCB chemistry with forged reliability.

Every A105 globe valve is cast or forged in-house, machined on CNC centers and 100% shell and seat tested to API 598 / ISO 5208 before shipment, with EN 10204 3.1 material certificates traceable to the heat. PMI verification is available on request for stainless and alloy grades.

Engineering Notes — Specifying an A105 Globe Valve

Flow direction is a specification, not an installation detail

A globe valve is directional and the arrow on the body matters. Flow under the disc is the conventional arrangement for manual valves: it makes the valve easier to open against pressure and keeps the packing unpressurised when closed. Flow over the disc is preferred at high differential pressure, because it holds the disc onto the seat instead of trying to lift it, which removes the chatter and seat damage that a lifting disc produces on a throttling duty. The two arrangements cannot be swapped in the field — decide before the valve is built and confirm the direction on the datasheet.

Trim, throttling range, and what erodes it

A flat disc gives tight shutoff but almost no control resolution — most of the flow change happens in the first part of the stroke. A parabolic or needle-profile plug spreads the change across the full travel and is what you want if the valve is doing real regulation. Hardfacing matters just as much: 13Cr is the standard trim, while Stellite-faced seats are the usual answer for steam, flashing service, or any line carrying particulate. In liquid throttling, check where the vena contracta pressure sits relative to vapour pressure — cavitation will destroy a soft or unhardened seat in weeks, and no body material choice compensates for it.

The pressure-drop penalty, and the Y-pattern answer

The tortuous path that gives a globe valve its control also costs head. A T-pattern body turns the flow twice and has a markedly lower Cv than a gate or ball valve of the same size. A Y-pattern angles the seat so the flow path straightens out, recovering a good part of that loss while keeping the throttling characteristic. For forged small-bore high-pressure duty — bypasses, drains, chemical injection — the Y-pattern A105 body is the usual choice for exactly this reason. If you are sizing on Cv rather than line size, state the required Cv and the flow range on the enquiry.

What to include on the enquiry

  • Flow direction: under the disc or over the disc, decided at design stage
  • Disc profile — flat, plug, or parabolic — matched to shutoff versus regulation
  • Trim and seat hardfacing, with Stellite where the duty is steam, flashing, or erosive
  • Required Cv and the actual flow turndown, not just the line size
  • Packing type and fugitive-emissions class if ISO 15848 applies
  • Actuator thrust and fail position, including the unbalanced seat load at maximum differential
